When to Rotate Tires: FWD & RWD Drivetrain Rotations

Engines in FWD vehicles send power to the front wheels while engines in RWD vehicles have power sent to the rear wheels. Each drivetrain has a different tire rotation process:

  1. As mentioned above, we generally recommend rotating your RWD or FWD tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. For more specific information, we recommend checking your vehicle’s manual.
  2. For FWD drivetrains, move your rear tires to the front and flip sides for each tire– making sure that the rear right tire goes to the front left, and the rear left goes to the front right. When moving the front tires back, they can stay on the same side. This is a forward cross pattern.
  3. For a RWD vehicle, you’ll need to perform the rearward cross. Move the front tires directly back, then the back tires forward, switching sides for the given tires.

If you do a lot of driving on rough or uneven roads, your tires will need to be rotated more often. Whey rotate your tires anyways? If you don’t rotate your tires, the uneven wear on your tires can lead to flats, blowouts, and a shorter lifespan for your tires. A tire rotation is also a great time to do a wheel alignment on your GMC vehicle at our dedicated service center.

When to Rotate Tires: AWD Vehicle Rotations

How many miles to rotate tires for AWD cars varies for either FWD or RWD vehicles. We recommend performing a tire rotation on your AWD vehicle every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or every six months. Your owner’s manual may also have more specific requirements for AWD tire rotations depending on your make and model. But generally, it’s recommended to come in more often than you would for a FWD or RWD car.
